Foundation Celebrates 10th Anniversary In Grand Style

The posh, newly inaugurated, Manila Grand Opera Hotel was the setting for an equally posh celebration – the 10th Anniversary of the Manuel Luis Quezon Alumni Foundation, Inc – on December 5, 2008.

Attendees started to trickle in shortly before 7pm to find members of the Silver Jubilarians (Class ’83), co-hosts of the grand affair, putting final touches on their special presentation. At the 8th floor lobby, the indefatigable ladies of the MLQHS Alumni Foundation formed a warm reception line for arriving guests and alumni; ably assisted by a handful of the Foundation’s scholars. Inside, the evening’s masters of ceremonies, Engr. Tony Pajaro (’68) and Ms. Rebecca Tolentinto (’83), firmed up the evening’s program and prepared the audio-visuals.

The ballroom was barely half-filled when dinner call was made; this, to make time as the clock was moving fast past seven thirty. During dinner, to make up for lost time, alumni were advised to fill out their respective ballots; for the fifteen seats on the MLQHS AFI Board of Trustees which will be vacated soon. The exercise was actually ministerial since, Engr. Tony Pajaro explained, of the several individuals who earlier signified their intentions to seek election into these seats, several have, for various reasons, later declined to pursue their candidacy further. Quite propitiously, Engr. Pajaro continued, fifteen remained as viable and winning candidates; therefore making the vote simply an affirmation. Having dispensed with that bit of business, the 10th anniversary bash cum silver jubilee celebration began.

A very touching doxology, to Charlotte Church’s “The Prayer”, kicked off the program events which was immediately followed by the singing of the national anthem; also accompanied by an audio-visual show.

Engr. Rey Ignacio Diaz (’70) was called upon to deliver the welcome remarks which was a short and very intimate address which was a prelude to the warm and somewhat cozy program prepared for the night. It will be remembered that in 2006, Engr. Rey played host to the alumni homecoming in MetroGate Silang.

Next was the class “roll call”. Starting with “Batch Number One”, the class of 1960, the emcees called alumni to rise up and make their presence felt. It was a very moving experience to witness batch after batch, some well represented, others with just a couple of attendees, rise up to be acknowledged by their fellow Quezonians. There were some batches which had no representation; notably the younger batches 1990s upwards. Although, it was a pleasant surprise to have had attendees form batch 2005. The loudest catcalls and applause were garnered by the batches which had significantly large delegations – 1964, 1968, 1969, 1972 and, of course, 1983. Across the board, most batches had decent representation.
